They kept yelling and screaming until they had no more breath. They were really tired and exhausted...They had gone through all these difficulties in their brief lives and now this… They were so disappointed and scared. They were crying silently, holding each other’s hand.
Suddenly, Shumaj started singing her favourite lullaby. It reminded her of her home and her mother- she must have been so worried all this time, she thought.Soon, Hanza followed her and Jack did so too, in his mother tongue. They felt secure and peaceful. After all, when in danger or in difficulty, your home and your family are your shelter. Maybe none of them was near now but they always carry them in their little hearts.
Some days later, they were starving to death. They had had no food, just some water. They kept asking for some bread and something to keep them warm.
One day, something strange happened… The lady went down the stair to the dark dungeon holding a tray with food on it. She was followed by the two men, who proved to be her sons. They were carrying blankets and a candle. As soon as they gave them the blankets they left the house to go out for a coffee- that’s what they told their mother.
The lady lit the candle and put the tray on the floor. A black spider climbed on the hand and stung her! She instantly fell asleep on the floor! This was their chance! As they were running out of the dungeon, Jack stepped on a black stone. All of the sudden, a door to a new, mysterious room opened. In it, they found the stolen charm they had been looking for. He grabbed it and they rushed out! They went straight to the nearest police station and told everything to the first policeman they met. They were offered food and a place to stay until they got back to the refugee camp. Later they heard that the lady was found sleeping in the dungeon and she was arrested. The same happened to her sons, who were drinking their coffee at the central square. Their disguise as detectives didn’t help much!
The three children went back to the camp and told everything about their adventure to their parents. They were so happy to be all together again that they forgot how tired they were. They talked, sang and danced until very late at night.
Finally it was time for everyone to sleep! Hanza and Shumaj laid down in their tents, on the hard soil but somehow they felt so warm in there. They slept and dreamed away…
It was then that they heard their mother’s soft voice:
George! Jennifer! Wake up, it’s time for school! Your presentation about the refugee story is today!!!
